National record holder Murali Sreeshankar topped the men’s long jump qualifying round to reach the final along with Muhammed Anees Yahiya, who qualified eighth-best, at the Commonwealth Games here on Tuesday.

Sreeshankar, 23, a gold medal contender, was the only athlete to break the 8m automatic qualifying mark, with an opening round effort of 8.05m in Group A.

He made no more attempts. However, his jump was wind assisted, with a tailwind speed of +2.7 m/s.

Sreeshankar, who finished seventh at the recent World Championships in Eugene, USA, has a season and personal best of 8.36m.

Yahiya, on the other hand, finished third in the Group B qualifying round with a best jump of 7.68m. He has a personal and season best of 8.15m.

Those who touched the automatic qualification mark of 8m or top 12 players made it to the finals which will take place on August 4th.
