New Delhi: The Ministry of Defense on Thursday signed a contract with BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd (BAPL) for the procurement of additional BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles with dual-role capability at a total cost of approximately Rs 1,700 crores.

Continuing its focus on self-sufficiency in the defense manufacturing sector, the Union ministry signed an agreement to procure BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles capable of additional use in a dual role. The deal was signed under the “Buy Indian” category at an estimated cost of Rs 1.7 billion, according to a Defense Ministry statement.

Earlier this year, in March, India successfully tested a surface-to-surface BrahMos cruise missile in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The extended-range missile was able to hit the target with precision and accuracy.

According to the ministry statement, the deal is likely to provide a further boost to local arms and ammunition production with the active participation of the national defense manufacturing sector.

“It is notable that BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd is an India-Russia Joint Venture (JV) making a crucial contribution to augmenting the new generation of Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM) with improved range and dual-role capability for ground and anti-ship attacks,” the ministry statement read.

With the induction of the new surface-to-surface BrahMos missiles, the military capability of the Indian defense forces is likely to be enhanced and the acquisition is also likely to fulfill the goal of being prepared for sudden war at all times.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February this year and Chinese aggression in India’s eastern Ladakh theater of operations in June 2020, where demilitarization is still taking place, the country’s focus on self-sufficiency in manufacturing defense and being alert and prepared to face aggressive opponents at all times has been one of the priorities of the BJP-led government in the Center.
